Appvion has announced the launch of Alpha 185 E, a non-topcoated direct thermal label facestock designed with Appvion’s phenol-free chemistry. Alpha 185 E is fully recyclable and provides higher resistance to heat, water, and alcohol.

The product is suitable for a variety of direct thermal applications, including distribution, logistics, and cross-docking. Notably, Alpha 185 E is versatile for use with recyclable packaging materials that have shorter lifespans, as it can be recycled without the need to remove the label beforehand.

“Alpha 185 E represents a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainability,” says Genevieve Koch, product marketing manager at Appvion. “This product not only meets the high standards of our EarthChem portfolio but also addresses the growing demand for environmentally friendly solutions in the market. We are proud to offer a direct thermal label facestock that delivers exceptional performance while being mindful of our planet.”

Appvion recently introduced EarthChem, a portfolio home to a range of paper and film direct thermal products that embody the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The following topcoated and non-topcoated paper and film direct thermal products currently fall within the new portfolio:

Topcoated:

  • CleanSlate Film E – Durable and heat-stable direct thermal film for indoor and outdoor applications made with natural components.
  • Dispersible E – World’s first phenol-free direct thermal label facestock that disperses entirely in water and other aqueous solutions, the company says.
  • Résiste 165 E – Designed specifically for package delivery and logistics direct thermal label production.
  • Résiste 15% PCW E – Incorporates multiple sustainable features, including a post-consumer fiber base that performs like a virgin fiber product.
  • Résiste Rx E – Engineered specifically for pharmacy prescription labels where image durability against household chemicals and the environment is required.
  • Résiste SR E – Pre-siliconized direct thermal solution for linerless label production.
Non-Topcoated:
